A Great Diversity of Industries Supports Stable Jobs in Columbus

Columbus is the capital of the state of Ohio and is named for the explorer Christopher Columbus. The largest city in the state and also the third largest metropolis, it also serves as the county seat of Franklin County.

With the strong economy of the city diversified among various industries like education, insurance, banking, fashion, defense, aviation, food, hospitality, logistics, steel, energy, medical research and health care, retail, technology and manufacturing, the Discovery City has done well to spread out the types of income it’s set to earn from its citizenry. It has the distinction of being ranked in 2010 as one of the Top Ten of the best big cities in America in 2010 and getting the rank of No. 5 in the nation as the headquarters of Fortune 500 companies.

Columbus was lucky enough to escape the recession precisely because of this spread out economy.  The city’s also known for being investor-friendly, ranking about 4th in the country.

The schools are biggest employers with the hospitals coming in next. The R&D departments of the hi-tech companies, information/library companies, retail clothing companies, and other large employers like Nationwide Insurance and more than 70 other insurance companies, American Electric Power, Wendy’s International, The Limited, Inc., Borden Inc., Consolidated Stores Corporation, and Bob Evans Foods, Inc. all have corporate headquarters in the city. Add to that the more than 400 offices run by twenty of Columbus’s prominent financial institutions around the region and the picture is complete for the jobs in Columbus that are available.

The government is the third biggest provider of jobs in Columbus. They need about 3,000 employees to handle the daily shipment of 10,000 items to military bases worldwide. Columbus produces a large amount of manufactured goods with the main categories putting out machinery (auto parts and appliances), fabricated metal (airplanes and auto parts), food processing, and printing and publishing with other goods like telephone components, computer equipment, glass, and coated fabrics.

Government is very supportive of small and start-up companies and they concentrate on revitalization and oversee small business partnership programs to sustain jobs and the companies that generate them. The training programs available for business and industry are another sign of their support.

The focus on development of the downtown area led to several billion dollars being poured into the city from public and private entities. What was unique about this revitalization plan is that the ideas came from the citizenry itself, with the local government starting a “Tell Us Your Great Idea” campaign to get input from businesses and community members. Starting in 2000, multi-million dollar infrastructures have been going up in the downtown area, from the Nationwide Arena  to the renovation of the Greater Columbus Convention Center, parking areas, restaurants, and new shops all brought vitality back to the aging downtown.

Jobs in Columbus can also be found in the marketing, distribution, and warehousing sector. Because of the city’s strategic location and a world-class transportation system, it’s become a hub for the shipping network’s import and export industry.  The city has a designated free trade zone, an international airport that is serviced by twenty-one passenger and freight carriers, and amenities for air charter services. And on the ground, three major railroad and 100 motor freight companies complete the system.

And in a massive effort to improve the quality of life in the city, the newly-formed Green Council of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce solves pressing environmental problems with innovative products and services to promote more businesses “going green” and encourage companies to be more environmentally responsible. The Chamber itself leads the way by example, by having its headquarters in a renovated building that is Green Spot certified by the city and by incorporating environmental practices into its daily operations like collecting recyclables, using local materials, conserving water and energy, and reusing furniture. Clearly, Columbus is a city of positive action.

With the entire community working together to provide new opportunities to the citizenry, it’s not a wonder that Columbus is one of America’s most innovative, attractive, and business-friendly cities. Just its basic diversity and drive will ensure that there will be no end or lack of jobs in Columbus.

Over Deliver Because It’s Not About You
Several years ago, I was in the midst of opening up various legal recruiting offices around the United States.  In my sheer enthusiasm for the business, I would bring new recruiters from around the country to Los Angeles and have them live with me for several months while training them in my method of recruiting.  The new recruiters would sit in my office and I would observe them recruiting and ...
